Dream Day Foundation is proud to announce our Team Captain for this year’s Walk/Run in Baton Rouge, Gwen Engquist! To get to know Gwen better, we sat down with her and asked a few questions.
What made you want to get involved and become team captain?
My family and I have been supporters of the Dream Day Foundation and St. Jude for many years, so when I heard that Dream Day was going to have a team in the Walk/Run, I knew that it was the perfect opportunity to get more involved! As a mom of three (plus a Labrador that thinks he is a human), the ideal project for me is one where I can have my whole family participate. By leading the Dream Day team in the fight against childhood cancer, I am setting an example for my kids and teaching them how good it feels to help other people by giving back to the community.
Why should people join the team?
Like I said before, this event is perfect for the whole family! Whether you run the 5K or do the family walk, your participation is changing lives. The Dream Day team would love to have you and your family support us in our mission to help St. Jude cure childhood cancer. Serious athletes, casual walkers– we welcome EVERYONE. Use this as an opportunity to teach your kids the value of giving back– or use it as an opportunity to remind yourself how amazing it feels to pay it forward. Either way, we want to see you there!
How would you describe the experience so far?
I am SO excited! It is my goal to make this the most successful Dream Day team yet. My husband and kids are already signed up on our team and are ready to get going with fundraising! I am asking everyone from my kids’ school friends to the people at my gym to help us make this event a success, and I know that they will rise to the occasion.
Beyond the Walk/Run event, what is the big picture of these fundraising efforts?
Families that receive services from St. Jude are never asked to pay for them; this incredible organization gives these families hope, but their reach is so much further than that. St. Jude freely shares all of its research, so even if your sick child or loved one is never a St. Jude patient, chances are that at least part of their treatment was researched or developed at St. Jude. By donating, you are not only helping the patients of today, but you are also shaping the future of medicine by funding this vital research. It is St. Jude’s goal to END childhood cancer, and together we can help them do it. When you participate in the Walk/Run, you are both giving back and investing in a brighter future for everyone.
The St. Jude Walk/Run to End Childhood Cancer of Baton Rouge is September 24, 2016.
